When people talk about search engine optimization and how to generate website traffic from the search engines, a really important element is often overlooked. The search engines are primarily looking for quality content and more than this, they are looking for new content.

If the search engine spiders keep visiting your site and there is nothing new, the spiders will visit your site less often but if they visit your site and always find new content to index, they will come back more frequently and more importantly, they will index this content against your keywords so that your site has more chance of being found from the search queries that people type into the search engines.

If your site does not lend itself to having pages of regularly updated content, you should consider setting up a blog on the same domain as your main site or alternatively, to set one up on a different domain and have it linking to your main site. Blogs provide a great opportunity to regularly add content to your site.

The next consideration is to produce unique content rather than duplicate content as unique content is regarded as more valuable by the search engines. This can be a challenge as it takes time to continuously create unique content. Many website owners use freelance copywriters to produce their content and this can be very cost effective. Another but less desirable option is to take existing content and re-write it sufficiently so that it appears to be new and unique but if you go down this route, be careful to ensure that the re-written content is sufficiently different from the original.

The other really important thing with the content you are producing is not to just focus on publishing it on your own website or blog. Rather than posting all of your unique content on your own site, you should distribute some or even most of it to article sites, press release sites or as a guest blog writer on other people’s blogs, always ensuring that there is at least one link pointing back to your own site. Most often, the link pointing back to your own site should be in the resource box that appears at the end of the article or press release.

If you are going to distribute your content to a large number of article sites it is a good idea to change the content for each site or certainly, vary it every ten sites. You can do this manually or use article spinning software to create unique variations of your original article. By submitting largely unique content to a wide number of article sites you will not only be creating good backlinks to your site but also generating immediate web traffic via people clicking on your link. And of course, there is also the chance that website owners will pick up your content and publish it on their own sites, giving you even more backlinks.

Produce good quality unique content is one of the surest ways to increase your level of website traffic by enhancing your site’s popularity with the search engines and creating a network of links pointing back to your site.
