Table lamps, desk lamps, floor lamps, torcheries are one of the most common lighting fixtures. These are categorized as portable lights and are one of the most simple and handy lights that are being preferred by maximum homeowners for different tasks.

You can use these fixtures in many different ways. In fact if used properly they can fulfill the purpose of task , ambient and accent lighting together. You can move these to anywhere in your home as per your requirements. You can change their shades and bulbs to give a different look.

The major advantage of portable lights over the other permanently installed fixtures is that they are movable and handy. You can use them anywhere anytime. You just have to unplug them from one switch and plug into another, so you can control the mood of a place. You can place them at your task areas so that the intended job can be performed without any troubles. This is also an energy efficient option.

One major disadvantage with these lights is, as they make use of electrical wires, you need to have various switches in a room so as to use them in different areas. It can be possible for small rooms but for larger spaces, having switches near every task area is not possible. Using an extension cord is the solution for such situations. Be very careful while placing them. They should not run under the carpets as this can lead to fire. Apart from this, you also have to consider the furniture arrangements so as to avoid any other accidents.

There are mainly two types of portable lights : directional and omni directional. Table and floor lamps are omni directional and thus they are a good option for general and ambient lighting. The shades help in controlling the glare level and thus they make the room look simple and beautiful.

Another portable fixture which is in demand is a torcherie. It reflects all its light towards the ceiling and thus is not very bright. It is actually like a tall open floor lamp which is good for ambient lighting.

One good way to make the use of portables easy is to plug them into switched outlets. This way you can simply flip a wall switch to turn on a lamp etc. This will prevent the use of any receptacle in the middle of a room and thus accidents can be avoided. But be sure that these switching arrangements are made in accordance to other items in the room like furniture.
