So you want to start an eBay business? That’s awesome because I think that eBay is the fastest and easiest way to get started selling online. No other website can even come close to the $60 billion in sales that happened on eBay in 2008.

One thing that many beginning sellers on eBay forget, however, is that in order to be successful online, you can’t be an island. Sure you can run a successful eBay business from your home, but you’re likely going to have to connect with other businesses that aren’t home-based in order to make some serious profits.

The only way to get what you want in life is to help other people get what they want. You should always remember that your business is only in business when you help your customers. The quickest way to see if you’re helping enough people? Check your bank balance. The amount of money that you have in your account directly correlates with how many people you have helped. If your balance is too low, then you’re not helping enough people. It’s not complicated. Want more money? Help more people.

So how do you connect with people? You have to get out there. Talk to local store owners. Go to community business functions. Carry your business cards everywhere. Let everyone know that you sell on eBay. What many beginning sellers do is to let their friends and family know if they need anything sold. That’s a good start, but you need to take it farther.

Getting connected with more and more people in your community means that you have more and more opportunities to help them (and for them to help you). Think about small businesses that might need excess inventory liquidated. Are there other local businesses that need help selling their products online? What about individuals that may need their antiques sold? Start looking around and you’ll start seeing opportunities.

The bottom line? Get connected with people. The more connections you make, the more people you can help. The more people you can help, the more successful you’ll become.
