Roofs are the protective covers for us. The keep us safe from all the external elements. Hence it is our duty to protect them as well so that they can work efficiently for many years. Roofs, like any other thing demands regular maintenance. It is very important to inspect the roofs regularly to keep them in good condition. Below are some handy tips on how to proceed with the roof inspections.

The very first thing to keep in mind is that keeping the roof clean is very essential. So, while inspecting the roof, remove all the debris, leaves and other unneeded particles as these can cause damage to the roof. Leaves and debris traps moisture which can give rise to molds and mildew. These can block the flow of water and can clock the gutters as well putting unnecessary weight on the roof. You can use a plastic leaf rake, push broom, or air blower to clean the roof.

If long dense trees are hanging over your roof and blocking the sunlight. Trim them slightly so that a little sun light is able to reach your roof. This will decrease the moisture and the mold problem and will also reduce the debris that collects over it.

Check that gutters are not clogged with leaves and debris and that they are draining properly. Look for cracks, open seams, or sags where the gutter has pulled away from the roof.

Always follow safety measures while attempting any task your self. Wear rubber gloves while cleaning debris from the roof as there can be sharp particles also. Carry a bucket to collect all the debris and once you are done with it, flush the gutter with a hose. Bring a hammer along with you to fix any loose nails.

Flashing is used in areas around the chimneys, vents, skylights etc. These are the most prone areas for roof leaks. So check for loose or damaged flashings They are made up of different metals like steel, aluminum, copper etc. Also, look for any missing or worn out shingle and get it repaired as soon as possible.

If you find a loose piece of flashing, change it’s screw with a galvanized one for better protection and then apply roofing cement over the screw head. Use copper screws for copper flashing as galvanized metal might corrode it.

For sloped roofs, cleaning the debris and the gutters twice a year will keep many drainage problems away. For flat roofs, you need a drainage system that handles water, and it should be in working order at all times.
